Pregnancy massage therapy is a gentle form of massage specifically attuned to the needs of a pregnant woman and tailored to support the physiological, structural and emotional well-being of both mother and baby. Pregnancy massage is also called prenatal massage.
Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints. It is a popular complementary therapy for back pain during pregnancy when choices for pain relief, such as medication, are often limited.
Not only can massage be physically beneficial, the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy.
Pregnancy massage is different to regular massage. During pregnancy massage, your body will be properly positioned and supported using pillows and padding. This ensures comfort and safety for you and your baby.
Your massage therapist will be trained to use certain techniques, such as deep tissue massage, selectively. They will also understand which areas of your body to avoid and will use suitable oils or massage balms.
Our therapists choose not to offer massage during the first trimester of pregnancy. If you are in your second or third term, we would ask you to obtain verbal or written consent for massage from your midwife or GP before your appointment.
When you arrive at the clinic, we will ask you to fill in a form. Your therapist will then run a couple of tests and ask you a few health-related questions before the start of the session to ensure that massage is safe for you and your baby.
