Massage Therapy

At Southfields Physiotherapy we offer various types of massage therapy such as sports massage, deep tissue massage, myofacial release and pregnancy massage.

These different types of massage will each have their own emphasis, such as what tissues are targeted and how deeply they are worked. Massage therapy is the 'hands-on' mobilisation of the soft tissues of the body.

Massage can improve circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues; relieve muscular tension and pain; increase flexibility and mobility and help to clear waste products from muscles, which reduces pain and stiffness in muscles and joints.

Massage therapy is also thought to help the body's stress response by lowering levels of hormones such as cortisol and therefore may enhance immune function.

People get massage therapy for relaxation or for a variety of health conditions including:

  • Back pain
  • Muscle spasms
  • Arthritis and tendonitis
  • Stress-related conditions
  • Post-injury and post surgical conditions
  • Neck pain
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Circulatory and respiratory problems
